Position Details
Location: In person (Berkeley/SF, CA or London, UK). Rarely, pure writing roles may be entirely remote.
Type: Contractor, part-time. An extension into a full-time role is possible and desired for strong candidates.
Time commitment: At a minimum, one day of work plus prep time for teachers. Expect roughly 40-60 hours for writing an entirely new module. We are excited about candidates who can commit more.
Rate: $60-150/hr, depending on experience and role

About Iliad
Iliad is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. We run the Iliad Intensive, the Iliad Fellowship, and a range of conferences that bring together researchers working on the hardest problems in AI safety. We also incubate research organizations and an academic journal, and have an internal research team. We're a small and quickly growing team.
About the Role
As teacher, teaching assistant, or writer, you will directly support the Iliad Intensive, a course delivered to more than 40 promising students per monthly in-person iteration with around 15 rotating teachers per iteration. The Intensive alternates monthly between London and Berkeley/SF, and is projected to have concurrent monthly London+Berkeley/SF cohorts from January 2027 onward.
As a teacher, your responsibilities include:
Leading the teaching of at least one full day of the Iliad Intensive based on prewritten materials
Engaging with participant feedback to learn about necessary improvements, and documenting your findings to ensure they will be enacted
Helping with improving the teaching materials in your upfront preparation and after your teaching day(s), or communicating necessary improvements successfully to a different writer/editor
As a teaching assistant, you will assist a teacher to deliver their day by leading bounded components, group discussions, and exercise- or coding sessions, among other formats. Being a teaching assistant is a great way to get to know Iliad and our working process and to progress to become a teacher or writer later on.
As a writer, your responsibilities include:
Writing of new content and improvement of existing materials for our education platform (under construction)
Teaching of new materials at least once to battle-test and improve them
Engaging with (future) teachers and the upcoming education platform lead to ensure the materials are self-contained and an effective source for in-person and online learning
We are particularly excited about candidates who are interested in both writing and teaching, and who’d like to be involved across several modules and iterations of the Iliad Intensive. We believe that continued engagement is the best way to improve our course over time and gives you the best pathway into a full-time position.
What We’re Looking For
At a minimum, we are looking for someone with:
Mathematical or technical maturity; for example, a university degree in a subject like mathematics, physics, or computer science.
Knowledge of the AI alignment field at the level of the Iliad Intensive for some of our modules
Deep care for the effective learning of our participants and of everyone who engages with materials you write
Depending on the exact scope of your role, we are also looking for:
Teaching experience
A demonstrated sense of design and pedagogy
