About Iliad

Iliad is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. We run the Iliad Intensive, the Iliad Fellowship, and a range of conferences that bring together researchers working on the hardest problems in AI safety. We also incubate research organizations and an academic journal and have an internal research team. We're a small and quickly growing team.

About the Role

As the Iliad Intensive Extensions Lead, you will be responsible for the expansion of the Iliad Intensive beyond its original format: a course delivered to more than 40 promising students per iteration each month. We want to explore specialized advanced versions of the intensive and further ways to spread the original materials beyond our in-person courses, which are limited in their scalability. Initial ideas include:

  • Intensive Advanced: A version of the intensive going deeper on a smaller number of modules

  • Iliad Seminar: Leading experts teach a larger number of promising students in a more unstructured format

  • IntensiveX: We encourage independent groups and universities to run their own versions of the intensive based on our materials

  • Intensive Online: We facilitate online courses based on the intensive that reach a vastly larger number of students with smaller per-student cost

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Explore and prioritize between different ways the intensive could be expanded, including ideas beyond those above

  • Work closely with existing and new teachers and writers and our internal “textbook team” to establish new formats

  • Work with the upcoming Education Platform Lead to make our materials more self-contained and easier to spread beyond our immediate reach

You may also write and teach materials yourself to explore the entire workflow.

As Iliad is quickly growing, your role may adapt to changing needs of our program and Iliad as a whole.

What We’re Looking For

At a minimum, we are looking for someone with:

  • Mathematical maturity; for example, a university degree in a theoretical subject like mathematics, physics, or theoretical computer science

  • Knowledge of the AI alignment field at roughly the level of the Iliad Intensive for some of its modules

  • Deep care for the effective learning of the participants in our future programs

  • An entrepreneurial mindset: ability to explore, prioritize, and drive new formats from idea to execution with significant autonomy

Our ideal candidate also comes with:

  • Experience building or scaling any significant product, event, or program

  • Ability to effectively coordinate with teachers, writers, and external partners to reach our goals

AI is a fast-moving field that changes the nature of our work constantly, and we ultimately care about impact rather than any particular project or approach. As such, we also value:

  • A broadly general skillset that can be applied to many tasks

  • Comfort working in a fast-moving organization where priorities and roles will change

  • Curiosity and ability to use AI to augment, improve, and automate various aspects of your own work

We encourage you to apply even if you do not hit every criterion!

Benefits

Our benefits include:

  • Time Off: 25 days paid vacation annually

  • Flexible Working Hours

  • Team Retreats: We have occasional in-person team retreats
