Community & Health Manager
Position Details
Location: In person (Berkeley/SF, CA or London, UK)
Type: Contractor, part-time. An extension into a permanent full-time role is possible and desired for strong candidates.
Time commitment: Presence during course iterations, roughly 15-20 hours per week. We are excited about candidates who can commit to multiple iterations.
Rate: $50-80/hr, depending on experience

About Iliad
Iliad is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. We run the Iliad Intensive, the Iliad Fellowship, and a range of conferences that bring together researchers working on the hardest problems in AI safety. We also incubate research organizations and an academic journal, and have an internal research team. We're a small and quickly growing team.
About the Role
As the community & health manager, you will be responsible for the wellbeing and social cohesion of the participants and staff of the Iliad Intensive and the Iliad Fellowship, programs hosting in aggregate more than 50 people continuously. These programs are an immersive, demanding experience, and a thriving community is essential for participants to learn effectively and stay well throughout. Your responsibilities will include:
Be a cheerful, present, and approachable point of contact for participants and staff throughout each iteration
Organize socials, parties, and other community events that help participants connect with each other and with the broader AI safety community
Notice early when participants struggle socially, emotionally, logistically, or with workload, and support them or connect them with the right help
Mediate and resolve interpersonal issues among participants and staff
Develop scalable community practices and norms that keep the cohort experience healthy as we grow even further
We are particularly excited about candidates who are interested in supporting several iterations of our programs. Continued engagement builds the trust and context this role depends on, and gives you the best pathway into a permanent position.
What We’re Looking For
At a minimum, we are looking for someone with:
Strong interpersonal warmth: people naturally feel comfortable approaching you
Sound judgment in handling sensitive interpersonal situations, with discretion and care
Reliability and presence: you are consistently available during course iterations, including some evenings
Our ideal candidate also comes with:
Demonstrated experience hosting events or building communities, in any context
Familiarity with the AI safety community or adjacent technical communities
Experience in pastoral care, coaching, community management, or a related area
